2. As all the members had not seen the Report of the Malta Commission on Leprosy it was decided to postpone consideration of the subject, and to obtain the written views of members of the Committee by recirculation of the papers.
It was mentioned that the Commission had recommended that, if possible, a grant towards research work on leprosy should be obtained from the Tropical Diseases Research Fund. The Committee came to the conclusion, with regret, that it was impossible for the Fund to make any such grant until the financial position
was more secure.
3. The Committee read with interest the report of the work done at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine during the half-year ended the 31st of October, 1918, in connexion with the Government grant, and expressed particular In a discussion interest in the reports on research in quinine and dysentery. arising out of this report the Committee were generally of the opinion that the value of quinine for the relief of fever was established, but that no decision had been reached either for or against its use as a prophylactic.
The Committee hoped that the War Office would grant facilities for the
continuance of the work.
4. The reports of the Entomologist and Helminthologist, London School of Tropical Medicine, were then discussed. The Committee agreed that the reports were most interesting.
5. The Committee discussed Professor Nuttall's application* for an increase in the grant from the Fund to the Quick Laboratory.
Mr. Fiddian observed that grants from the Fund already exceeded the annual income, owing to the fact that it had been necessary to reduce by one-half the contributions from Colonial Governments.
The Committee expressed sympathy with Professor Nuttall's scheme, but regretted that the necessary increase in the grant could not be made owing to the financial exigencies of the Fund.
Before the meeting adjourned Mr. Fiddian brought two additional papers before the Committee :-
(1) The first dealt with complaints concerning the scale of diet of inmates
in the Government Leprosy Asylum in British Guiana. The Committee asked that the papers might be circulated for an expression of their opinion.
(2) The second point arose out of the latest Annual Report of St. Helena, in which reference was made to a proposal to use bacteriological products for killing the rats and mice which ravaged the crops. The Committee considered that the proposal need not be discouraged, as there was no danger of infecting human beings with enteric in this way, as had been alleged.
The Committee adjourned at 4.50 p.m.
