COLONIAL OFFICE to CROWN AGENTS.

Downing Street, 16th January, 1917. WITH reference to the letter from this Office of the 14th of December, 1915,* am directed by Mr. Secretary Long to inform you that he approves of

your making the following payments from the Tropical Diseases Research Fund;-

(a) To the London and Liverpool Schools of Tropical Medicine the sum of £500 each, as soon as application is made for the same, and the sum of £500 each on or after the 1st of July, 1917.

(b) To Professor G. H. F. Nuttall, F.R.S., the sum of £140, on or after the 1st of July, 1917

I am, &c.,

G. GRINDLE.

SIR,

Treasury Chambers, 8th January, 1917. In reply to Mr. Read's letter of the 28th ultimo,* I am directed by the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury to request you to inform Mr. Secretary Long that they sanction a contribution of £500 a year for the next two years from Imperial funds to the Tropical Diseases Research Fund, on the under- standing that the contributions by the Indian and Colonial Governments during the same period will be maintained at not less than fifty per cent. of their respective rates during the present financial year.

They must not, however, be held thereby to have accepted the principle that the same proportion should be maintained after the return to normal conditions as heretofore between the Imperial contribution and those of the other interested Governments.

SIR,

I AM directed by Mr. Secretary Long to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 17th Novembert [21st November,] transmitting reports on the work done at the London [Liverpool] School of Tropical Medicine in connexion with the annual grant from the Tropical Diseases Research Fund, and [of your letter of the 22nd of November §] applying for the renewal of the grant in respect of the current year.

2. The reports in question were laid before the Advisory Committee of the Fund at their meeting on the 6th of December last, and were read with interest.

3. On the recommendation of the Committee Mr. Long has approved the grant of £1,000 from the Fund to the School during 1917. The Crown Agents have been authorized to pay you, on application, the sum of £500 forthwith, and the balance of the grant on or after the 1st of July next.

COLONIAL OFFICE to INDIA OFFICE.

SIR,

Downing Street, 16th January, 1917. WITH reference to the letter from this Office of the 7th of August, 1914,† and previous correspondence, respecting the renewal of the contribution of the Indian Government to the Tropical Diseases Research Fund, I am directed by Mr. Secretary Long to request you to be so good as to inform Mr. Secretary Chamberlain that, in view of the satisfactory financial position of the Fund and the suspension of the annual grant in respect of the Department of Protozoology in the University of London, as well as the reduction in the grants to the two Schools of Tropical Medicine and the Quick Laboratory in the University of Cam- bridge, Mr. Long has felt himself justified in asking the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury to invite Parliament to contribute £500 a year only to the Fund for the next two years, as against the present grant of £1,000 a year, the continu- ance of which was not promised beyond the end of the current financial year; the situation to be reviewed towards the end of 1918.

2. Their lordships have agreed to this contribution, on the understanding that the contributions of the Government of India and the Colonial Governments concerned will be maintained for the same period at not less than fifty per cent. of the present rates.

3. In the circumstances Mr. Long trusts that he is justified in assuming that the Government of India will be prepared to continue their contributions at the rate of £250 a year for the same period.

I am, &c.,

G. GRINDLE.
