The first twenty-four cases were treated with eucalyptus oil and chloro- form, the remainder with thymol.
The case of Soriebah Sese mentioned above was instructive.
On examination he was debilitated and anæmic, was constantly on the sich list suffering from "debility," and was very emaciated. He was treated with thymol grains 20, three doses at intervals of two hours, followed by a purge. Afterwards he was put on a mixture containing iron and arsenic.
Six weeks after his discharge from hospital I saw him again and he was greatly improved. He had put on flesh and looked less anæmic. He stated that he felt very much better.
The other patients treated with thymol received similar treatment. I was unable to watch the effect on them owing to their discharge from jail. Moyamba. Dr. W. A. Nicholson.
I have the honour to inform you that an Ankylostomiasis Return was sent from this station on 6th December, 1914, as follows:-
Bonthe,
Forty-one cases examined, three cases being positive, giving 7:3 per cent. No further work was done during the quarter.
Dr. C. H. Allan.

An examination of 50 in-patients and prisoners was done during the
rainy season of 1914 :—
(2) In each case six cover slips were obtained.
(3) According to nationality the rate of case infection was:----
Mendi, 70 per cent.
Sherbro, 70 per cent.
Temne and Susu, 55-5 per cent.
Creole, 27-3 per cent.
(4). According to previous place of residence the rate was:—
Bonthe, 586 per cent.
Rivers, 68.8 per cent.
North of railway, 20 per cent.
This last figure is based on so small a number of cases that no reliance can be placed on it..
Son,
was sent
to
Ankylostomiasis as a possible cause of insanity. Bernice Thomp- Commis- me by the District age about 35, sioner at the beginning of September, with a request that she might be sent to Kissy. She stated that a Mandingo witch doctor had been employed to put bad medicine on her, and that a devil came out every night recently from the roof above her bed and pinched up her abdominal wall.
(2) I informed the District Commissioner that, as she was not dangerous to herself or others, she could not be sent to Kissy without the permission of the Principal Medical Officer, and she was taken away by friends.
(3) In October, from the 7th to 12th, she started parading the town between the hours of 3 and 5 a.m., shouting at the top of her voice. On the 12th, as she was passing my house at 4.30 a.m., I took the advantage of her shouting "Doctor, I go die" to have her arrested on the foreshore.

(4) At & a.m. she was transferred to hospital and given 18 grains of thymol (mixture), more with the idea of giving her an unpleasant draught than with any idea that she might have worms.
(5) An examination of fæoes a few hours later showed under a half- inch objective an average of two-and-quarter A. duodenale ovæ to every field. Treatment was continued, and the final dose of thymol given was 24 grains. (6) Seen on 24th November; she is still a little childish, but no longer sees any devils nor has any ballucinations.
Case of Ankylostomiasis Anæmia.-Mamakob, aged 14, Mendi, native of Sherbro, was brought to Bonthe Hospital on the 29th September, complain- ing of extreme breathlessness on the slightest exertion, and also that her menses, which had commenced at the beginning of the year, had been absent for three months.
(2) She was extremely anæmic and, though probably a pure Mendi, was nearer the colour of a half caste.
(3) She had a loud hæmic bruit, a rapid pulse, her afternoon tempera- ture ranged from 99-4° to 100-2° during the first six days in hospital, and she had slight tenderness in the right umbilical region.
(4) An examination of fæces showed about two to two-and-a-half ovæ of A. duodenale in every field (half-inch objective). The blood stained by Leishman yielded a count of per cent. :-

(5) Active treatment was commenced on the 2nd October, 8 grains
of thymol being given, 12 grains were given on the 6th, 20 grains on the 10th,
24 grains on the 14th, and 30 grains on the 19th. Iron tonics were adminis- tered daily during the thirty-nine days she was in hospital.
A second blood count on the 1st November showed :---

(6) She was discharged from hospital on the 6th strong and capable of running without any undue dyspnoea. Her general colour had only darkened very slightly, but the colour of the conjunctivæ had greatly improved and no hæmic bruit could be detected even in the decubitus position.

The number of cases since I have taken over from Dr. Semple is 10
ankylostome cases out of 35 in-patients, 45-7 per cent.
None of these were heavy infections.

A relative blood count was done in eleven of the cases, 200 white cor-
puscles being counted in each case.
Polymorphonuclears
Lymphocytes
Mononuclears
Eosinophiles
Transitionals and mast cells
The average of the eleven cases is :—
35 per cent.
29-0 per cent.
15-9 per cent.
15-7 per cent
9.8 per cent.
There seems to be a definite slight increase in the relative count of mono- nuclears and lymphocytes. The eosinophilia is not as high as one would expect. The highest was 37 per cent. in one case, the lowest 5 per cent.
The common symptoms were dizziness, indigestion, and headache.
