I am, &c..
HENRY LAMBERT.
SIR,
(No. 316.)
No. 18.
BRITISH GUIANA.
THE GOVERNOR to THE SECRETARY OF STATE.
(Received 18th August, 1914.)
[Answered by No. 19.]
Government House, Georgetown, Demerara, 1st August, 1914. WITH reference to my despatch, No. 182, of the 21st May, I have the honour to transmit copy of a letter addressed to the Secretary of the International Health Commission, Washington, D.C., forwarding copy of a resolution passed at a repre- sentative gathering of residents of the Peter's Hall Medical District in this Colony, expressing their warm appreciation of the work which is being carried on by the Rockefeller Foundation International Health Commission in their district, for the eradication of ankylostomiasis.
2. I transmit also a copy of a letter which I caused to be sent to Dr. Howard conveying the Government's appreciation of the work undertaken by the Com- mission.
I have, &c.,
WALTER EGERTON.
SIR,
No. 17.
WINDWARD ISLANDS: ST. VINCENT.
THE SECRETARY OF STATE to THE ACTING GOVERNOR.
(Miscellaneous.)
Downing Street, 4th August, 1914.
I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch, No. 64, of the 4th ultimo, transmitting one (No. 70-27th June) in which the Acting Adminis- trator of St. Vincent reports the taking of a vote in the Legislative Council of the Island for the sum of £1,038 as provision for a year's expenditure upon the pro- posed ankylostomiasis campaign.
2. I have to convey to you my approval of this vote and of its proposed apportionment.
3. I agree that Dr. Durrant may be allowed to draw salary at the rate of £600 per annum with a travelling allowance of £50 per annum as Medical Officer in Charge. He may also be allowed to retain the horse allowance of £50 from local funds as head of the proposed Sanitation Department, on the understanding that this appointment will in no way interfere with the proper discharge of his duties I should, however, be glad to in connexion with the ankylostomiasis campaign. learn exactly what duties this appointment in the Sanitation Department will involve.
4. I observe that no provision is made in the vote for the improvement of sani- tation, a point which was emphasized in the last paragraph of my despatch, Grenada (General) Miscellaneous, of the 25th of March. It may be well to remind you that some such provision will probably be found necessary in order to carry out sanitary reforms concurrently with the treatment of the infected; but the amount to be provided and the action to be taken may be considered when experience has been gained of the working of the campaign.
5. I have caused the International Health Commission to be informed in the sense of the second paragraph of Mr. Roden's despatch.
I have, &c.,
Enclosure 1 in No. 18.
