St. Helena... An Order in Council of 1839 provides for the appointment of a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to be named and appointed from time to time by Her Majesty, Her heirs and successors, by Letters Patent under the Public Seal of the Island, such Judge to hold his office "during the pleasure of Her Majesty, Her heirs and successors, and not otherwise ": also for provisional suspension by the Governor in Council upon proof of misconduct. Another Order in Connell of 1852 gives the Governor power to act in certain cases in place of the Chief Justice.

At the present time the Governor is ex-officio Chief Justice
