No. 18.
COLONIAL OFFICE to PROFESSOR J. S. HALDANE, F.R.S., DR. A. E. SHIPLEY, DR. A. G. BAGSHAWE, and SURGEON-GENERAL SIR R. HAVELOCK
SIR,
CHARLES, K.C.V.O.
[Answered by No. 21.]
Downing Street, 2nd March, 1914. Ankylostomiasis Committee.
I AM directed by Mr. Secretary Harcourt to enclose, for your consideration, prints of the following papers:
Letter* from the Director of the International Health Commission, relating to his recent tour in the West Indies:
Memorandumt laid before Medical Selection Committee and extract from Committee's minutes :
Despatcht from the Governor of the Windward Islands, covering proposals for work in Grenada, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent:
Despatch from Governor of Leeward Islands regarding the work in Antigua. I am to request that you will be good enough to furnish me with any observa- tions that you may wish to offer on these papers.
In particular, Mr. Harcourt will be glad to learn what staff would, in your opinion, be required to carry out the investigation suggested for Antigua. You will observe that the Governor appears to have adopted the Grenada scheme in its entirety as suitable for Antigua; but it will be seen that the work to be done in the two islands is entirely distinct, and that a much smaller staff, and a shorter period of work, would appear to be sufficient to carry out the inquiry in Antigua.
As regards the schemes prepared for Grenada, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent, Mr. Harcourt will be glad to learn if you have any suggestions to offer as to the staffs and equipment provided.
I am, &c.,
H. J. READ.

3. In compliance with the direction contained in the last paragraph of your despatch of the 26th August last, I enclose for your information statements of the particulars of the prevalence and distribution of ankylostomiasis in the Colony, from which it will be seen that the incidence of the disease is greatest in the St. Joseph, Couva, South Naparima, and Guaracara districts. I also enclose copies of circulars issued by the Surgeon-General which indicate the measures that have been taken to cope with the disease.
It is regretted that the particulars referred to above did not accompany my despatch of the 2nd instant.
I have, &c.,
GEORGE R. LE HUNTE,
Governor.
