For the moment, however, this Government is not, I fear, in a position to make such an arrangement. The post of Government Entomologist is temporarily vacant, and it is improbable that the officer who may be ultimately appointed to it would have time before the date of the proposed Conference to acquire such local know- ledge as would fit him to represent the special needs of Nyasaland. The Director of Agriculture (Mr. J. S. McCall), and the Government Agriculturist (Mr. E. W. Davy), either of whom might in other circumstances have been selected to attend the Conference in connection with its mycological aspect, are both on leave, and are due to return to this Protectorate on the 6th November, 1914, and the 24th January, 1915, respectively. They could not, therefore, be present at the Conference without serious inconvenience to this Government.
While, therefore, the general proposal of the Bureau appears to be in all respects well calculated to further the objects in view, and while I agree that both the entomological and mycological sides of the question should, if possible, be repre- sented, I regret that, having regard to local exigencies, it will not be practicable, in my judgment, to provide for such representation in respect of this Protectorate. A
copy
of this despatch will be laid before the Governor in due course; and should he take a different view he will doubtless communicate with you accordingly.
In conclusion, may I suggest that, failing the attendance of an officer of this Government, a few papers dealing with such practical problems of entomology and mycology as are met with in Nyasaland might be acceptable to the Conference. Should this proposal cominend itself to you and to the Committee there would be no difficulty in giving effect to it.
I have, &c.,
(In the absence of the Governor,) H. L. DUFF.
Chief Secretary. (Governor's Deputy.)

the 3rd July, 1914,* on the subject of the Imperial Bureau of Entomology and its objects and work, and to inform you that, in accordance with your suggestion, the Government of Malta will guarantee a contribution of £20 per annum towards the expense of the Bureau for a period of three years.
2.
With reference to paragraph 6 of your Circular despatch of the 29th May, 1914, a copy of which accompanied your despatch under reply, I have reason to anticipate that it will not be practicable for this Government to send a special representative to the Conference of official Entomologists which is to be held in London during the latter part of July, 1915.
