1911, the list of animals mentioned in Section 2, paragraph I, is altered so that hence- forward it is prohibited to shoot the animals named below under No. I. Further, the division into classes of the animals named in Section 3, paragraph I, is altered in the manner shown below under No. II, and the restriction in Section 5c Nos. 1 and 2 is changed, so that henceforward the restrictions stated below under No. III are valid.

These Regulations come into force immediately, with the proviso that animals, of a kind the shooting of which was hitherto unrestricted, which have been shot in virtue of shooting licences already issued, are not counted in the number as now limited.

The Imperial Governor.

I. List of the animals which it is prohibited to shoot or capture in accordance with Section 2 of the Shooting Regulations of November 5th, 1908/December 30th,

1911.

II.

1. Ostriches, carrion-kites, secretary birds (" Schlangengeier "), balearicans ("Kronenkraniche "), and owls, the eggs of which may also not be removed or damaged;

2. Gorillas and chimpanzees;

3. Dugongs ("Seekuh "') and ant-eaters (" Schuppentier "');

4. Young (foals, calves) of the rhinoceros, zebra, giraffe, hippopotamus, and all horned animals (antelopes and gazelles, including buffaloes and gnus);

5. All mother-animals of the kinds mentioned under 4, if it is obvious that

they are accompanied by their young;

6. Female animals, even when not accompanied by young, of the great koodoo ("Schraubenantilope "), the small koodoo ("Schraubenantilope "); Hirchantilope," "Gras- und Moorantilope," water-buck and

Class 1-All game with the exception of those mentioned in Section 2 and in the following classes.

('lass II.—Rhinoceros, giraffe, great koodoo (“ Schraubenantilope "). Class III-Elephant.

Class IV-Beasts of prey, water-hog, wart-hog, porcupine, earth-pig, apes (with the exception of those mentioned in Sections 2 and 5c), birds of prey (with the exception of those mentioned in Section 2), amphibia and reptiles.

III. List of the animals the shooting of which is restricted by the Shooting Regulations of November 5th, 1908/ December 30th, 1911.

Of the animals which it is permitted to shoot the following numbers of males may be shot for each shooting licence :-

1. Rhinoceros, all kinds of giraffes together, hippopotamus (with the excep- tion of the administrative districts of Tanga, Pangani, Rufiyi, and Lindi, in which there is no restriction on the number of hippopotami "Gras- und Moorantilope," great which may be shot) "Spiessbock,'

all kinds of Giraffengazelle,' koodoo (Schraubenantilope "), colobus apes together, and also Kandt's long-tailed monkey; not more than two each;

2. Buffalo, eland, antelope, marabou and all kinds of white heron together:

not more than four each;

3. Zebra, gnu and all other kinds of antelopes and gazelles: not more than

ten each.

Each female animal killed of the above-mentioned kinds of game is reckoned as équal to two male animals.

NOTIFICATION of the GoveRNOR OF GERMAN EAST AFRICA, RESPECTING THE PROHIBITION TO SHOOT HIPPOPOTAMI IN THE KAGERA, OF JULY 29TH, 1913. (Translation.)

In accordance with Section 13, paragraph III, of the Shooting Regulations of November 5th, 1908/December 30th, 1911 (Amtlicher Anzeiger, 1912, No. 3), the shooting of hippopotami in the Kagera River on the section from the Kissaka Ferry to the waterfall in the Kagera Bend (east of the confluence of the Kagera and Ruwuwu), including a zone of land one kilometre wide to the left and right of the river, is prohibited until further notice. This prohibition comes into force imme- diately.

NOTICE OF THE GOVERNOR OF GERMAN EAST AFRICA, respecting THE PROHIBITION TO SHOOT RHINOCEROS IN THE TERRITORY OF KANGADA AND MAVINDI (DISTRICT of IRINGA), OF JULY 24TH, 1913.

(Translation.)

In accordance with Section 13, paragraph III, of the Shooting Regulations of November 5th, 1908/December 30th, 1911, the shooting of rhinoceros in the terri- tories of Kangada and Mavindi, in Ussanga, District of Iringa, is hereby prohibited until further notice. The district in which the prohibition applies is bounded as follows (cf. the sectional map F 4, Gawiro, and the sheet" Neulangenburg large German Colonial Atlas):—

II.

TRYPANOSOMIASIS.

Before dealing with the outbreaks of this disease which have occurred during the period with which this report deals, I propose first recalling the history of two previous outbreaks which occurred on the Blantyre-Zomba line of transport, as they have a special bearing, in so far as the source of infection is concerned, on outbreaks that follow.

On my arrival in the country in 1910 the first outbreak of trypanosomiasis, as far as the Blantyre-Zomba road was concerned, to which my attention was directed was that on Namadidi Estate, Zomba. The obtainable history of the outbreak prior to my arrival was that the animals were lost from trypanosomiasis-the Medical Officers, Drs. Old and Stannus, who had examined numerous blood preparations from sick animals, invariably found trypanosomes, and subsequent investigations by me
