One case inhabits a little valley on the Seng'wa, where fly and game are numerous. Has no food at his village, and has certainly been living on game and

wild fruits.

One case lives at the edge of the fly. His illness began five months after a journey through the fly, and progressed at first slowly. In this case the origin of

the sickness is doubtful.

Details of Human Cases.

Melek, of Sibaba, male, 25.-Home is on edge of fly. In March last went a journey to Sinasitonka. On return felt ill, and has been ill on and off ever since.

Present condition: not obviously ill. Came to Kariyangwe looking for work as a cook. Has a gland size of a bean on right side of neck, which, on puncture, showed fairly numerous trypanosomes.

No other sign of illness, but boy, being questioned, admits that for the last five months he has had attacks of illness.

No. 2. Sinampamba, of Saboda, male, 45.-At beginning of dry season went with No. 3 to Ngoka. Ten days after his return he fell ill and has been ill ever since. Has been ill now for five months. Some days feels better and walks about, then confined to hut again.

Present condition weak and thin; feels ill all over; slow of speech, but quite sensible. P. 120. No tremor. No oedema of face. Glands, a single large bean each side. Trypanosomes in gland juice.

No. 3. Siyamayale of Sianangonzi, male, 50.—History same as No. 2. Found sitting outside his hut obviously weak and ill. Muscles wasted and flabby. Marked tremor. Speaks and acts actively. No cedema. Complains of his legs, not his head. Has a large bean left side and a large bean each epitroch. Trypanosomes in gland juice. Blood negative.

No. 4. Shandungă, of Siandola, male, 20-Home is in the fly. On September 30th he arrived at Buwampu with Mr. Trotter, whom he had accompanied up the Seng'wa to Nyika and thence to meet us. From Buwampu he accompanied me to Gwampongo. There we spent three days and set out to return to Kariyangwe. On October 2nd this boy was examined along with the other carriers. Blood negative. No glands.

On October 15th he was taken ill with high fever, which continued all the next day, and on the third day gradually dropped. The man was exhausted by this time and his pulse was beginning to fail (vide chart). Twelve grains of soamin given on the second day had no effect. Soamin given at midday. Six hours later trypanosomes, one to the field.

From the fourth to the seventh day he was very weak, but gradually gaining strength. The fever had left him with partial aphasia, which remained permanent, his speech consisting of one or two mumbled words. He complained of cramps in his feet. During these days the blood was free from trypanosomes.

On the eighth day a trypanosome was found in the blood after five minutes' search. We noticed also for the first time a gland as large as a bean in his neck, which on puncture was found to contain a trypanosome,

On this day we left Kariyangwe, returning on November 2nd (the 19th day of the sickness). We found the man better but still weak. During our absence he has had two injections of soamin, 6 grains each. A trypanosome was found in his blood on the 3rd November (the 20th day of the sickness).

It looks as if the 8th day might have been the beginning of a second cycle. The

20th day would be in the middle of a third.

No. 5. Shinga woman, 30. A daughter of Sinasitonka.-This woman, her child (case No. 6) and the man Siamando (case No. 7) all belong to a group of Sinasitonka's people who have moved this year to a new village under Dupondo on the right bank of the Buci. They first got sick at the beginning of this dry season, at the time when they were engaged in moving, the man clearing the bush,

the woman going up and down with food.

First, taken sick in May. Was ill for some time and got better, and was pre- paring to go out and live when taken ill again.

Very ill and anæmic. T. 102 4.

Glands a bean left side of neck and a hazel

left epitroch. Marked tremor of tongue. Is deaf. Deafness came on since she has been sick.

(Died at beginning of December.}

No. 6. Shinga's child.-18 months old, but so small that one would take it
