climates. Our keen desire to complete the work entrusted to us by His Excellency led to the party remaining in the field for a far longer period than is customary or advisable under similar conditions.
In spite of the youth of the. non-commissioned officers and of their newness to tropical life, their health has been generally satisfactory, and in this statement the Medical Officer, Naraguta, concurs, as follows:-
I
with you agree
that the field service conditions under whien Captain Giles's men have worked have been of a very trying and arduous nature, especially for newcomers. Solitary existence under canvas throughout the rains is a severe test for any man, and, all things considered, I think the non-commissioned officers have come through very satisfactorily.

"A. C. PARSONS,
14
Medical Officer, Naraguta."
In view of the experiences gained I am arranging for each of the non-commis- stoned officers of No. 2 party to spend a portion of their tour at Headquarters.
14. I beg to draw His Excellency's attention to the valuable nature of Appen- dices B and C, which evidently involved a large amount of personal labour on the part of Captain Giles.
15. I have the honour to bring to His Excellency's notice the excellent services of Captain F. L. Giles, Royal Engineers, who, in addition to being an officer of quite exceptional energy, possesses exceptional gifts of organisation and administration. I cannot speak too highly of Captain Giles, and I consider that what success His Excellency may be pleased to think has been achieved by the mines survey section is practically due to this officer's untiring devotion to his duties during an exception- ally long tour of seventeen months.
Captain W. F. Lumsden's services have already been brought to the notice of the Secretary of State by His Excellency.
I further desire to bring to His Excellency's notice the excellent work of the missioned following non-commissioned officers, and especially of the two first named :-
officers.
2nd Corporal Stock, R.E. Lance-corporal Lethbridge, R.E. Lance-corporal McMahon, R.E.
Lance-corporal McDonnell, R.E.
Lance-corporal Short, R.E.
Would His Excellency be kind enough to bring the services of Captain Giles and these non-commissioned officers to the notice of the Secretary of State with a view to the Army Council being informed.

I am at a loss to understand how the "exceptional conditions " grants could Para. 6. reach so large a number as 167. I entirely agree with the Surveyor-General that the results achieved have been entirely satisfactory," as they are described. I have not, of course, seen the maps or records, but I note that the Surveyor-General is entirely satisfied with them."
The cost of the party, including salary while on leave, is stated to be £13,948, Para. 7. and the earnings £4,016, showing a net cost of some £9,000. I shall be glad to have exact figures when they are available.
It is extremely unfortunate that No. 2 party has been so long delayed. Noted,

and 15.
I shall take an early opportunity of bringing the services of Captain Giles to Paras. 14 the notice of the War Office, and also of the non-commissioned officers named.

Para. 4.
The Secretary,
Northern Provinces,
Zungeru.
I have, &c.,
F. G. GUGGISBERG, Major, R.E.,
Surveyor-General.
The results of Captain Giles's fourteen months' work appear to have been rendered in an admirably clear and useful form, though I have not as yet, of course, had time to go through them. Captain Giles undertook an extremely hard task. Not only was the survey and the straightening out of a tangle sufficiently onerous in itself, but the mining law and regulations were in a state of transition, the staff of the Government Inspector of Mines was insufficient, and these facts rendered the work more difficult. The record of achievement is a fine one, and I very greatly appreciate the great effort which has been made to carry out this most difficult task in the minimum of time. I am in full agreement with Captain Giles that so long a period in the field is inadvisable, and too great a strain on the surveyors.
There was no Survey Department in Northern Nigeria prior to 1913, and, therefore, of course, no properly fixed points were in existence.
I heartily agree.
I approve the proposed publications. I shall be glad of an advance sheet of the 1/250,000.
