WITH reference to the Colonial Office Circular despatch of the 17th of March last, relating to the publications of the Visual Instruction Committee, I have the honour to inform you that I have received a letter from my Government asking me to obtain and forward to them, for the use of the Department of Public Instruction, a complete set of the "United Kingdom" lantern slides referred to in the above- mentioned despatch, and three copies of each of the seven lectures, and if you would be so good as to cause me to be furnished with these slides and lectures (on repayment) for transmission to my Government I should be very greatly obliged.

THE GOVERNOR to THE SECRETARY OF STATE.
(Received 23 July, 1913.)
[Answered by No. 140.]
Government House, Port Louis,
9th June, 1913.
I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of the despatchest noted in the margin, with regard to the present position of
Miscellaneous of 6 June, 1912. Circular of 17 March, 1913.
the work of the Visual Instruction Committee of the Colonial Office.
2. As you are aware, in 1905 a sum of £100 was voted by the Legislature towards the cost of a special edition of the lectures on the United Kingdom with appropriate slides, which have from time to time been shown to the boys at the Royal College and to children in the aided schools, primary and secondary. There has hitherto been little facility at the Royal College for the use of these slides, but the lecture demonstration room which has been included in the scheme of enlargement of the College buildings at Curepipe will afford full opportunities for their exhibition.
3. I would request that the Crown Agents may be instructed to procure for the use of this Government six copies of the book of lectures entitled "The Sea Road to the East," by Mr. A. J. Sargent, in cloth, at 1s, each, and one set of the coloured slides, omitting those which, as pointed out in your despatch Miscellaneous of the 6th June, 1912,‡ are duplicates of the slides in the first lecture of the Mauritius edition of the lectures on the United Kingdom.
4. The cost of the books and slides is estimated at £29 165., for which no
provision has been made. The expenditure will be charged to the appropriate items of the Education Vote, and, if necessary, a supplementary vote will be taken in due course.
