SIR C. P. LUCAS to MR. A. E. ASPINALL. [Answered by No. 92.]
65, St. George's Square, S. W., 14 April, 1913. My colleagues on the Visual Instruction Committee of the Colonial Office have asked me to enquire whether you will write and arrange for them a series of six lectures with lantern slides on the West Indies, on the lines of, and in harmony with, the lectures on other parts of the Empire which have already been published or are in course of publication.
With the West Indies must be included Bermuda, the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, and, of course, the Bahamas, British Honduras, &c. Each lecture will be accompanied by, on an average, sixty slides. You will be expected to select the slides, arrange them, and take the whole responsibility of supervising the pub- lication of the series, Messrs. Philip being the publishers of the book, and Messrs. Newton the agents for the slides. All the expenses connected with the slides will be borne by the Committee, who will wish to secure the copyright of as many slides as possible. For that purpose it will probably be advisable, as has been done in other cases, to ask the Colonial Governments, through the Colonial Office, to send collections of photographs for making slides. It is, of course, desired not to incur more expense than is necessary to secure a thoroughly good result, but the Committee wish both the letterpress and the illustrations to be of a high order.
They offer you, for the whole work, a fee of £80, and would hope that it completed by the end of the year.
may
Yours sincerely,
C. P. LUCAS.
