Enclosure 4 in No. 81.

St. Andrew's Provincial Committee for the Training of Teachers,

⚫ DEAR SIR JOHN,

Training College, Dundee,

Visual Instruction Committee.

28th February, 1913.

WITH reference to my letter to you of the 8th current, I have pleasure in stating that I brought before my Committee to-day the suggestion that they might purchase for the use of their students and of the schools in the province the lectures and lantern slides issued by the Visual Instruction Committee on "The Sea Road to the East." My Committee at once gave me authority to make the purchase.

THE VISUAL INSTRUCTION COMMITTEE to THE RHODES TRUST.

DEAR SIR,

[Answered by No. 89.]

Downing Street, 8 March, 1913. WITH reference to the correspondence ending with your letter of the 7th of February, 1912,* to Sir Charles Lucas, the Visual Instruction Committee desire to inform the Rhodes Trustees that the preparation of the lantern lectures on South Africa, for which the Trustees, in May, 1910, were so good as to grant a sum of £500, is now far advanced, and they hope to publish the series later in the year.

The Committee are sparing no expense to provide the best possible material; but they are satisfied that, while ensuring in every way a high standard of excellence, both in the lectures and in the slides, they will have a balance in hand on the com- pletion of the South African work, and they would be glad if the Rhodes Trustees would allow them to apply that balance to the preparation of further lectures on the Empire.

This application is made, now that the South African series is within measurable distance of completion and its cost can be estimated with ample margin, in order that there may be no delay in carrying forward what remains of the whole Empire scheme which the Committee have undertaken, and which, they are assured, commends itself to the Trustees.

Yours faithfully,

A. BERRIEDALE KEITH.

The Committee note with satisfaction that you expect to be in a position to supply sets of slides for purchase within a week of receiving an order. At the same time I have to point out, with reference to the penultimate paragraph of your letter of the 16th December,* that the Committee do not intend to circularise all the schools in the United Kingdom but only to circularise a select number of the more important schools.

I am, &c.,

A. BERRIEDALE KEITII.

No. 84,

MESSRS. NEWTON AND COMPANY, LIMITED, to THE VISUAL INSTRUCTION COMMITTEE.

DEAR SIR,

(Received 14 March, 1913.)

[Answered by No. ST.]

New Lantern Slide Gallery,

37, King Street, Covent Garden,

London, W.C., March 13th, 1913.

In reply to the letter from the Visual Instruction Committee, dated March 12th, 1913, we shall have much pleasure in accepting the terms for the hire of the Com- mittee's sets of slides there laid down, and to render an account annually, at the same time as that of the sales.

We

propose to print the hiring terms in our forthcoming catalogue, and to place the slides in our Hiring Department in time for the commencement of next season.

We should like you to note that, as we told Sir Charles Lucas and Mr. Noall, these sets, being on sale, can be purchased by any firm in the trade for the purpose of letting on hire, and they can then let them on hire at any price they choose without paying any portion of the hiring fee to the Committee. We do not think that this is of any great consequence, as you will receive a commission on the sale when they purchase, but we think it as well to draw your attention to this in writing, as well as verbally to avoid any possible misunderstanding. It is a difficulty inherent in any arrangement which includes a "royalty" on the sale as well as on the hire of any lantern slides.

May we also draw your attention to the very urgent need of letting us have details of the new sets which are in course of preparation as early as possible. Our new educational catalogue is now in the printer's hands, and we are reserving seven pages for the two sets of Canada and South Africa. Of course, we shall be unable to publish our new list until we get the particulars, as we cannot send it out with seven blank pages, and we trust you will let us have the details in time.

We hope to issue the catalogue in two months from now, and it is, of course, all important, from the point of view of sales and hire, that this catalogue, which will be the principal cducational slide catalogue in the world for probably the next four years, should contain all particulars which may induce customers to purchase and hire the slides.

We remain, &c.,
