No. 57.

THE DEPUTY EDUCATION OFFICER, LONDON COUNTY COUNCIL, to VISUAL INSTRUCTION COMMITTEE.

(Received 6 December, 1912.)

Education Offices, Victoria Embankment, W.C.,

5th December, 1912. DEAR SIR,

ADVERTING to previous correspondence, I have to inform you that the Com- mittee of the Council concerned have again given careful consideration to the question of the reproduction at institutions under the Council's control of certain of Mr. Hugh Fisher's paintings.

I am now directed to inform you that the Committee find that there are certain difficulties which cannot easily be overcome, and they have reluctantly decided not to proceed further with the question.

In the event, however, of the Visual Instruction Committee making arrangements for the publication of any of the pictures, the Committee will be pleased to consider as to their suitability for school purposes.

The Committee desire me to tender their thanks to the Visual Instruction Com- mittee for the trouble they have taken in the matter.

I am returning by bearer the two pictures you were good enough to send for the Committee's inspection.

2. Messrs. George Philip and Son will publish the book of lectures for the Committee, and it is understood that you will arrange to have copies of the book on sale.

3. I have to request that you will take steps, at the expense of the Committee, to copyright a sufficient number of the slides to safeguard the Committee at a cost of about £1 5s.

VISUAL INSTRUCTION COMMITTEE to MESSRS. NEWTON AND

COMPANY, LTD.

GENTLEMEN,

[Answered by No. 59.]

Downing Street, S. W., 5 December, 1912.

It is understood that you are prepared to undertake, for the Visual Instruc- tion Committee of this Office, the sale of the slides illustrating the lectures on Australasia on the following terms, and I have to request, therefore, that you will notify, formally, your acceptance of these terms :--

(a) The necessary slides to be provided by you at your own cost, and to be sold

by you at the following prices :—

VISUAL INSTRUCTION COMMITTEE to MESSRS. NEWTON & COMPANY,

GENTLEMEN,

[Answered by No. 62.]

Downing Street, S.W., 12 December, 1912.

On behalf of the Visual Instruction Committee I have to inform you that at the meeting of the Committee on the 4th of December much dissatisfaction was expressed at the complaints which had been received that slides ordered from you could not be obtained until after long delay.

You will, no doubt, agree with the Committee that the success of the scheme depends on the applicants for slides being able to obtain them with reasonable despatch, and the Committee wish to express their strong view that this essential must be secured.

I am to invite you to make any suggestions which will ensure this object, which becomes more important as each new series is issued.

It appears to the Committee that at least one full set of each series of slides should always be in hand.

VISUAL INSTRUCTION COMMITTEE to MESSRS. NEWTON & COMPANY, LTD.

GENTLEMEN,

[Answered by No. 63.]

Downing Street, S.W., 12 December, 1912.

IN your letter of the 21st of December, 1911, you made proposals, at the invitation of the Visual Instruction Committee, for the hiring of slides. The Com- mittee have hitherto taken no further steps in the matter, for fear that hiring would interfere with sales, but they are now disposed to reconsider the question, in the hope of securing a wider use of the slides in the schools of the United Kingdom.

The Committee did not consider the terms proposed by you to be sufficiently favourable to themselves, and I am to ask you to revise those terms and to inform
