No. 1.

SIR CHARLES LUCAS to THE RHODES TRUST. [Answered by No. 8.]

DEAR SIR [OR MADAM],

65, St. George's Square, S.W., 11 January, 1912.

On the 13th of May, 1910, the Rhodes Trustees were good enough to make a grant of £500 to the Visual Instruction Committee of the Colonial Office "to- wards the preparation of lectures illustrated by lantern slides on South Africa for use in the schools of the United Kingdom, India, and the Colonies." This was in response to a memorandum forwarded by Lord Crewe to Lord Rosebery which asked for a grant from the Trustees of a sum not exceeding £1,000, such cover the cost of a visit to South Africa and of the preparation of lectures on that part of the Empire."

as would

Sir Everard im Thurn and myself have been given discretion by the Com- mittee to arrange for the preparation of these lectures, and we have come to the conclusion that it will not be necessary, or, indeed, advisable, to send a special artist to South Africa: that the necessary material can probably be obtained through the Colonial Office, the High Commissioner, and in other ways with the funds at our disposal, being selected by the gentleman who will be entrusted with writing the lectures. This is the result of further enquiry and experience since the memor- andum was sent to the Trustees, but we think it right before finally settling on the procedure to ascertain that the Trustees do not insist upon a special visit to South Africa, and are content to allow us to arrange in the way we think best for the preparation and production of the lectures. We gather from the terms of the letter of 13th May, 1910, that this is so, but would be glad to have it confirmed.

An early reply would oblige
