No. 72.

LONDON SCHOOL OF TROPICAL MEDICINE to COLONIAL OFFICE. (Received 14 May, 1913.)

SIR,

[Answered by No. 83.]

London School of Tropical Medicine (University of London),

Royal Albert Dock, E., 10th May, 1913. AT the request of the Committee of the London School of Tropical Medicine, I write to make application for a further grant from the Tropical Diseases Research Fund towards the maintenance of the Special Departments in the School.

I have before me your letter of the 18th December, 1912, No. 35334/1912;* 'in which it is pointed out that, owing to the receipts which have come to hand from the Fund which Mr. Chamberlain has raised for the School, the Advisory Committee feel that they would not be justified in continuing the whole of the grant hitherto paid and that in these circumstances my Committee cannot look forward to a continuation of the full grant. As regards the present year, the income which will accrue from Mr. Chamberlain's Fund is not likely to come into the accounts. The Fund has not yet been closed and no portion of it has been used for purposes of the School other than the amount expended upon the new buildings.

Perhaps, therefore, the Advisory Committee may favourably entertain this application and continue the grant at any rate until the end of the year.

It is generally felt by the School Committee that they would desire to be assured, so far as the Tropical Diseases Research Fund is able, of the continuance of any grant which may be made in the future, for it will commend itself to your Committee that to carry on research work with the best teachers it is necessary to offer them such fixity of tenure as may reasonably be expected by anyone devoting whole time to these Research Departments.

If, therefore, the Advisory Committee sees its way to inform the London School of Tropical Medicine that they will, so far as they are able, continue to pay in future years a definite grant to the School, it will facilitate the work of my Committee and tend to secure the best teachers for the various subjects for which the Special Depart- ments have been established.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE to THE GOVERNOR. [Answered by 2550/14.]

SIR,

Downing Street, 17th May, 1913. WITH reference to your despatch, No. 57, of the 23rd May, 1912,* forwarding returns relating to mosquito-borne diseases in St. Vincent during the year ended 31st March, 1911, I have the honour to state that, in the absence of a head of the Medical Department in the Colony, it would appear desirable to make some arrange- ments to facilitate the preparation of returns and reports on medical and sanitary matters by centralizing to some extent the work of compilation. I would, there- fore suggest that the Medical Officer, Kingstown District, might conveniently be required to superintend the preparation of future returns and reports from the information supplied by each District Medical Officer. I should be glad to receive your observations as to the practicability of giving effect to this suggestion.
