GEORGE R. LE HUNTE,

No. 124.

FIJI.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE to THE GOVERNOR.

Downing Street, 5 February, 1913.

(No. 50.) SIR,

I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch, No. 338, of the 5th of December,* informing me that you are prepared to recommend the par- ticipation of Fiji in the facilities which will be afforded by the new Imperial Bureau of Entomology.

2. I am glad to learn that you share my view as to the usefulness of an organi- sation of this nature, and I am of opinion that £50 a year would be a reasonable sum for Fiji to contribute. As the contributions from the other Governments which are co-operating are being guaranteed in the first instance for three years, I would suggest that the Fiji Government should give a similar undertaking in respect of its contribution.

3. I have to request that the first contribution may be provided in the Estimates It is, however, important that the contribution from Fiji should for the year 1914. be paid over to the Bureau during the same financial year as those from other Colonies, that is to say, the first contribution should be paid over in the financial year ending 31st March, 1914. You should, therefore, give instructions to the Crown Agents for the Colonies, as soon as the Estimates for 1914 have been passed, to pay over £50 from Fiji funds to the funds of the Bureau, and similar instructions should be given in future years.

L. HARCOURT.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE to THE HIGH COMMISSIONER.

(Miscellaneous.)

[Answered by No. 142.]

Downing Street, 7 February, 1913.

SIR,

I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch, No. 657, of the 31st of December last,† respecting the employment of Dr. C. Strickland as Travelling Medical Entomologist, and to inform you that the Entomological Research Com- mittee have considered the suggestion in paragraph 2 that Dr. Strickland's services should be retained in the Malay States for another year on the same conditions as heretofore but with a salary of £390 instead of £360.

2. The Committee doncur as to the desirability of Dr. Strickland being allowed to continue his work in the Malay States, but they point out that the circumstances in which they undertook to share the cost in the first instance were exceptional, and that in view of the heavy calls upon their funds they regret that it would not be possible for them to continue to bear any portion of the expenditure after the expira- tion of the period for which Dr. Strickland was originally engaged.

3. I am pleased to note the Principal Medical Officer's testimony to the success of Dr. Strickland's work, and I should be prepared to approve of his continuing his investigation for a further year if the whole of the cost could be borne by the funds of the Federated Malay States. But I leave this to your decision.

I have, &c.,

L. HARCOURT.
