MY LORD,
WITH reference to your Lordship's despatch "Miscellaneous," of the 29th
22nd May, 1910. ultimo, calling attention to no answer having been received to your Lordship's circular despatch of the 28th May, 1909,† on the subject of mechanical transport, I have the honour to state that, in view of the late Mr. Griffith's despatch, No. 173, of the 4th October, 1907, which explained the conditions existing here, I did not consider that any reply to it was required.
2. I beg to apologise for the mistake I have made, and I ask leave to express my regret that I should, by my unintentional negligence, have put your Lordship to the trouble of writing to me on the subject.

Government House, Georgetown, Demerara, 10th June, 1910. WITH reference to your Lordship's circular despatch of the 28th May, 1909,* enclosing copies of a table drawn up by the Mechanical Transport Committee. showing approximate cost of running and upkeep of mechanical transport vehicles, and requesting that they may be returned with the blank columns filled in, showing the figures in connection with any such system which may be in force in this Colony,. I have the honour to state that there are no local mechanical transport services in British Guiana and nil returns are accordingly transmitted. made that if any system of mechanical transport is established hereafter, infor- mation such as is now asked for is to be furnished as requested.

It was filed during my absence from the Colony, but steps have now been taken which, I hope, will prevent any similar irregularity in future.

I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch Miscellaneous of the 29th ultimo* calling my attention to the fact that your Lordship's circular of the 28th of May, 1909,† had not been acknowledged.
2. In reply to the circular in question, I have the honour to state that there is no system of mechanical transport in the Colony, and that under the Motor Car
Act, 1908, No. 6, the use of mechanically-propelled vehicles is illegal.
3. The instructions in paragraphs 3 and 4 of the circular will be complied with
if the circumstances therein contemplated should arise at any future date.

I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your Lordship's despatch, Miscellaneous, of the 29th April last, calling for a reply to the circular despatch
of the 28th May, 1909,* on the subject of mechanical transport.
2. Transport of this nature has not been adopted in any of the Colonies under this Government. The smallness of these islands, the hilly nature of the country, and the fact that a good deal of the carriage is done by coast steamers and native craft, combine to create conditions in these Colonies unfavourable to the use of mechanical transport vehicles.
