port is employed on short jobbing work only, the cost per ton mile and daily mileage cannot be worked out except with great trouble. When obtained it would show very variable results, depending on whether the traffic happened to be over very short distances, or not.
I also attach a list of other military mechanical transport vehicles at Gibraltar and am sorry I am unable to supply any further detailed information.

(Received 28 May, 1910.)
Commissioner's Office, Berbera, 12th May, 1910. I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your Lordship's despatch, of the 29th of April, calling attention to the fact that the mechanical transport return asked for in Colonial Öffice circular of the 28th of May, 1909,† has not been received.
2. The circular in question had not been lost sight of, but a reply to it was originally deferred until an experimental trial of the Fowler Steam Tractor, which had then recently been sent out to Somaliland, should enable a report to be made on its efficiency. A full report of the two trial trips made by the tractor was forwarded under cover of my predecessor's despatch, No. 70, of the 31st of July, 1909, and it was then felt that no additional useful information could be supplied by filling in the blank columns of the table enclosed in the circular under reference. which appeared to require data relating to mechanical transport of a permanent and practical nature.

THE GOVERNOR TO THE SECRETARY OF STATE. (Received June 6, 1910.)
In reply to your Lordship's Miscellaneous despatch of the 29th April,†
Government House, Belize, 18 May, 1910. I have the honour to inform you that up to the present no mechanical means of transport have been used in this Colony on roads. Traction engines have been employed with success in mahogany work at the Hondo, and Mr. Richard Starkey recently imported a 30 horse power traction engine and took it part of the way to the Cayo; but the Pine Ridge proved unsound, the wheels breaking through, and it was found impossible to take it up overland, and it had to be brought back. An attempt will, I understand, be made to take it up the river by scow. practically entire absence of metalled roads and the low swampy nature of con- siderable areas of the country it would appear that for years to come the utility In the of mechanical means of traction will be very much restricted.
2. It is a question whether something of the sort could not with advantage be made use of on our feeder roads near the Stann Creek Railway, the land there being sound enough for haulages.
I have, &c.,
E. J. E. SWAYNE,
Governor.
