Good reports have been received from British Guiana, Gambia, Southern Nigeria, Mauritius, Ceylon, and Hong Kong; and nearly useless ones from Grenada, Uganda, British East Africa Protectorate, and South Africa. There seems to be (from the reports) little mosquito-borne disease in the Bahamas, Montserrat, and Seychelles, and no malaria in Fiji.
The twelve Colonies in the above table possess nearly twenty million inhabitants. On the average, malaria is the cause of 184 per cent. of the total admissions into hospital in them; but this, of course, refers only to the more severe cases of malaria among adults-severe cases among children, and slight cases generally, being seldom brought to hospital. This figure implies a probable malaria morbidity of several
per annum among the entire population.

As one pound of quinine will scarcely suffice for the exhaustive treatment of ten cases of malaria, the amount distributed or sold in the Colonies (2,239 lbs.) would be enough only for about 22,000 cases.
Apparently only 244 labourers were employed for “minor works," that is for keeping towns and houses as free as possible from mosquito-breeding. This amounts to little more than one man for 100,000 people. More than twice as many medical men were employed during the year- though effective sanitation would probably require at least one sanitary labourer to 1,000 people, and, say, 50 sanitary labourers to one medical man. We must, therefore, infer that the sanitary army of these Colonies contains more officers than men.
The total cost of the entire medical and sanitary service of the Colonies for 1910 appears to amount to about £531,375. But only a small fraction of this seems to have been expended on the prevention of mosquito-borne diseases, though these probably cause quite one quarter of the entire sickness and a considerable pro- portion of the entire mortality.
A further study of details had better, perhaps, be left over until all the reports have been received-when they can be compared with each other and with other reports coming from the same Colonies.

I AM directed by Mr. Secretary Harcourt to acknowledge the receipt of
Downing Street, 12 December, 1911. letter of the 16th of November* and to inform you that the half-yearly reports of your the special Departments in entomology, helminthology, and protozoology at the London School of Tropical Medicine were laid before the Advisory Committee for the Tropical Diseases Research Fund at their meeting of 1st December and were read with interest.
2. With reference to your letter of the 14th November,† the Advisory Com- mittee have recommended, and Mr. Harcourt has approved, the continuance for 1912 of the grant of £1,333 6s. 8d. to the School, and also a grant of £200 to provide for assistance to the Helminthologist. I am, however, to explain that no under- taking can be given that it will be found possible to continue this extra grant in
1913.
It will be necessary that the grant should be paid by two instalments, the first of which will be payable upon application to the Crown Agents for the Colonies on or after the 1st of January, 1912, and the second on or after the 1st July, 1912.
I am to add that it would be convenient if the reports for the School could be furnished not later than the 1st of November.
