No. 49.

PROFESSOR G. H. F. NUTTALL to COLONIAL OFFICE. (Received 8 August, 1910.) [Answered by No. 53.]

3, Cranmer Road, Cambridge, 7 August, 1910. OWING to the many investigations which are proceeding in the Quick Labora- tory, and the expenses thereby entailed, but more especially to the advent of Dr. Hindle at the Laboratory, I take the liberty of applying for an additional grant of fifty pounds (£50) wherewith to bridge over the period until a further grant may be forthcoming as the result of my application to be made on behalf of this laboratory for the year 1911.

Dr. Hindle, late of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, at present Beit Fellow in Medical Research, has come to establish himself in Cambridge, and more especially in the Quick Laboratory, during the coming two or three years. He was awarded the Beit Fellowship on the understanding that he would pursue researches upon sleeping sickness and spirochetosis, and, since his arrival in the laboratory he has been working with exemplary diligence at his chosen subjects of investiga- tion. To carry on his work adequately he requires some apparatus, and especially animals, and in the present state of the finances of the Quick Laboratory I am unable to meet his requirements without being put to personal expenditure. As I already have to personally aid in the work by defraying expenses amounting to at least £150 a year, I do not feel that I can do more. I trust, therefore, that the Advisory Committee will see its way to allowing the Quick Laboratory the grant of £50 for the purpose of furthering the researches upon which we are actively engaged.

I have, &c.,
