We should be glad if you could guarantee the disposal of about 1,000 sets. To undertake the publication of such a series as is under consideration requires an enormous outlay on the part of the publishers, and we like to feel that the publica- tion of a new work, such as is proposed, will at all events cover the cost of production, We consider the pictures should be published at 2s. 6d. each net in series of six plates; and to get the enlargement it will be necessary for Mr. Fisher to prepare cartoons to the required size. This, of course, will further add to the cost of production.

If this matter can be arranged, we shall be pleased to forward details of our proposal.

'country and in the other Dominions. I enclose copies, in its two forms, of the book on India, the first which we have published. Three other hooks, dealing with British North America, Australasia, and the chain of stations from Gibraltar to the Far East, are being prepared, and the Rhodes Trustees have made a grant of £500 towards the cost of lectures on South Africa.

6. The preface to the book on India, and the accompanying printed memo- randum will help you to appreciate the scope and progress of our work. Yours sincerely,

BOARD OF EDUCATION to VISUAL INSTRUCTION COMMITTEE.

(Received 20 May, 1911.)

DEAR SIR, Board of Education, Whitehall, London, S. W., May 20th, 1911.

I BEG to inform you that the Board have, with the consent of the Treasury, decided to purchase for the use of the Inspectors' Library a set of the slides prepared for the Visual Instruction Committee. I shall be glad if you will give instructions for the set to be addressed to the Librarian and delivered at the offices of the Board. Perhaps you would also ask Messrs. Newton to send in the account, made out in the name of the Board, to me.

I understand from Dr. Heath that you will provide us with 50 copies of the pamphlet which will accompany the slides.

I am, &c.,

MESSRS, THOS. NELSON & SONS to VISUAL INSTRUCTION COMMITTEE.

DEAR SIR,

(Received 16 June, 1911.) [Ackumwledged 19 June, 1911,]

Parkside Works, Edinburgh, 15th June, 1911. WE have pleasure in sending by this post a parcel containing your Committee's picture of "The Maori Girl," together with two proofs of a colour reproduction of the same in the size which would, in our judgment, be most suitable for demonstra- tion in school work.

We have gone to considerable expense in the preparation of this reproduction, and trust that the work will meet with your Committee's approval. May we ask for an early decision in the matter? This would greatly oblige

W. E. Noall, Esq.,

Secretary,

Yours, &c..

DEAR MR. MALAN,

No. 116.

SIR C. LUCAS to MR. MALAN.

Downing Street, 12 June, 1911. SOME years ago a Committee, now known as the Visual Instruction Committee, was formed, with the approval of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, but without any Government subsidy, to provide lantern lectures on the different parts of the Empire, written by as skilled a hand as possible and illustrated by the best slides.

2. The first venture was a book of lectures on the United Kingdom, of which several editions are now in use. I enclose a copy of the Indian Edition, which has been reissued for use here.

3. Correspondence passed with South Africa as to the preparation of a South African Edition, and the Transvaal undertook to bear, in the first place, the initial cost of adaptation, about £100. This £100 is for preliminary work only, ie, for editor's work, for payment for copyright, and for preparation of such special slides as may be required. It does not cover, I find, though I told you to the contrary, the purchase of a lantern or set of slides, nor the cost of multiplying copies of the book or of the slides. Each complete set of slides is estimated to cost about £35 or £40, and therefore the initial cost of the scheme, with books and one set of, say, 380 slides, would be at least £150.

4. Owing to delays over here advantage was not taken of this offer, but, if you wish, we could have an edition prepared here and proofs sent out to South Africa, or if you prefer it the edition could be prepared in South Africa. In any case, I have thought it right, on behalf of my Committee, to place the facts before you.

5. I take this opportunity of bringing to your notice the other side of our work the provision of similar lectures on the Overseas Dominions for use in this

MINUTES OF MEETING OF THE VISUAL INSTRUCTION COMMITTEE HELD AT THE COLONIAL OFFICE ON FRIDAY, THE 16TH OF JUNE, AT 4 O'CLOCK.

PRESENT:

The Earl of Meath (in the Chair).

Sir Cecil Clementi Smith.

Sir Philip Hutchins.

Sir John Struthers.

Sir Charles Lucas.

Mr. Sadler.

Mr. Noall (Secretary).

The minutes of the last meeting, having been previously circulated, were adopted.

The correspondence was reviewed.

The Committee were informed that Mr. Sargent had written the set of six lectures on the Imperial stations, and that they had been read by Mr. Mackinder and Sir Everard im Thurn. It was agreed that they should be returned to Mr. Sargent for revision.

The lectures on Australasia were being prepared, but there was a lack of suit- able photographs. Mr. Sadler thought that photographs to fill gaps in the Committee's material might be obtained through the Editor of " Country Life."

A letter from Sir Everard im Thurn was read, giving the result of his interview with the Deputy Education Officer of the London County Council. The Council were not in a position to purchase a large number of sets of the Indian slides, but wished to be allowed to make the slides themselves, paying the Committee a royalty on each set made. Sir John Struthers said that the Council already had a large
