SOUTHERN NIGERIA.

BOARD OF AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES to COLONIAL OFFICE.

SIR,

(Received March 16, 1907.)

[Answered by No. 126.]

Board of Agriculture and Fisheries,

4, Whitehall Place, London, S.W., March 15, 1907.

I AM directed by the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries to acquaint you, for the information of the Secretary of State, in reply to Mr. Antrobus's letter of the 26th ultimo, No. 6889/1907,* that the Board regret that no member of their veterinary staff is available at the present time for the purpose of undertaking a veterinary survey in Southern Nigeria similar to that for which Mr. James Brand, F.R.C.V.S., has recently been engaged for temporary employment by your Depart- ment in the Northern Nigeria Protectorate.

The Board understand, however, that the services of Mr. G. Garden, who was employed by the Transvaal Government on veterinary work at a period when Mr. Stewart Stockman, M.R.C.V.S., Chief Veterinary Officer of this Department, held the position of Principal Veterinary Officer of that Government, would be available for the purpose. Mr. Stockman is in a position to recommend Mr. Garden, whose training and experience would enable him to undertake the discharge of the duties indicated in the letter under reply.

I am to add that Mr. Garden left the service of the Transvaal Government owing to the fact that a reduction of the veterinary establishment was found to be necessary, and that he has lately completed a course of post graduate study in London.

Mr. Garden's present address for any communication is: The Poplars, Sudbury, Harrow.

I am, &c.,
