(No. 371.)

MY LORD,

(Received 14 December, 1908.)

Government House, 18 November, 1908. I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your Lordship's Circular despatch of the 13th of July last,* transmitting, for communication to the Senior Medical Officer, copies of the reports from the School of Tropical Medicine and from the Colonial Laboratory at Hong Kong, which were laid before the Advisory Committee of the Tropical Diseases Research Fund in June last. The Surgeon- General, to whom these reports were referred, states that he has read them with much interest, but adds that they do not appear to call for any observations from him.

2. I trust that the provision of a suitable bacteriological laboratory in this Colony, which has been strongly advocated by Dr. Clare, will enable the Medical Department here to furnish from time to time similar valuable information with regard to tropical diseases; and I have the honour to report, with reference to my despatch, No. 317, of the 28th ultimo,† that the Finance Committee has authorized a vote for the commencement of the work, and that the balance will be provided in next year's Estimates.

I have, &c.,

SIR,
