Patellar reflex.-Every endeavour was made to elicit a knee jerk in each case: it was not set down as absent until after careful investigation.
Pulse. It will be noted that the pulse rate was in nearly every case markedly above the normal: the count was always made at the close of the investigation, when the patient had been seated for some minutes.

Case No. 22-July 22nd. neck, chest, and region of hips.

Case No. 27. July 22nd. Katera. Man aet. 25-30. Complains of "njoka" in chest (? heart sensations) of palpitation and pain in back after walking.
Legs. No cedema, some tenderness of calves with numbness. Knee jerk absent. Grasp good.

Heart. Diffuse impulse third and fourth spaces left, and third right. Action regular, 75. Marked pulsation at right sterno-mastoid insertion. Marked turbu- lence of heart after walking a few paces. Neck glands not palpable.
Case No 28.-Kwabiha. Man æt. (?) 20. Complains pain chest and head. Walks well without assistance.
Legs. No odema, winces when calves are pressed, numbness of shins, knee jerk absent. Grasp fair. Says fingers are numb.
Heart.-No visible impulse except in episternal notch; systolic bruit behind sternum and at base, not over mitral. Rate 90. Neck glands not palpable.
Case No. 29. July 22nd. Kanbabazi. Woman (?) 20. Came for medicine for 'bisondi" (syphilis). On inquiring was found to have pain and numbness of legs.
Legs. Slight firm oedema over tibiae, tenderness on squeezing calves, knee jerk absent.
Heart.-120. No visible impulse, no bruit.
Case No. 30-July 23rd. Luganirwa. Man æt. 25; ill eight months. Pain neck, sacral region, and legs.
Legs. Says are numb back and front. No cedema. Does not mind his calves being squeezed, knee jerk obtained left, not right. Grasp weak.
Heart.-Pulsation epigastrium, not in neck; action regular 110; no bruit; temperature, normal. Neck glands not palpable.
Case No. 31-July 23rd. Nyakwesiba. Woman (?) 30; ill four months. Complains pain chest, knees, and neck.
Legs. No oedema, calves flabby, no pain on squeezing, no numbness, knee jerk slight left, absent right. Grasp fair.
Heart. No bruit; action regular, 130. Slight pulsation episternal notch, moves painfully with assistance of two people. Just able to cross legs for knee jerks to be tested. Temperature normal. Glands in neck not palpable." Examina- tion for them caused complaint of pain.
Case No. 34. July 23rd. Kaswahya. Woman æt. 35-40; ill 12 months. plains of pain in chest and head.

Heart.-Action quiet, no bruit, marked impulse above sterno-clavicular joint each side; pulse 110. Back tender.
Case No. 35.-July 23rd. Byanserwe, Girl æt. 10; ill two months. Complains of cough.
Legs. No oedema, calves a little tender, says shins are numb, knee jerk absent. Heart.-Marked impulse above sternum, pulse regular, 140. Systolic bruit second left space. Temperature 99 20. Neck glands not palpable.
Case No. 36-July 23rd. Ntundi. Woman, 30 (?); ill three months; pain in back, chest, and limbs.
Legs-Edema (firm) over tibiæ, winces on light pressure of calves, knee jerk absent. Grasp feeble; arm muscles tender.
Heart.-Epigastric pulsation, regular, 110, no bruit; visible pulsation under right sterno-mastoid insertion. Glands in neck palpable; neck a little tender. Is doing work.
Case No. 37. July 23rd. Kagandala. Woman æet. 40; ill 12 months. Com- plains of want of strength and pain all over.
Legs-Deep oedema over tibiæ; winces much at pressure over calves; knee jerk absent. Grasp weak; arm muscles tender.
Heart-Regular, 110; pulsation in neck; no bruit.
Case No. 38.-Nunsgwa. Woman, 20 (?); ill six months; greatly emaciated; pale; not able to stand up, and complains of general pains.
Legs. No cedema; calves much wasted; a little tender; knee jerk absent. Arms.-Muscles wasted and tender.
Ileart.-No symptoms; action regular and quiet. Neck glands not palpable. The emaciation and weakness in this case were extreme.
Case No. 39-Kanyana. Woman æt. 25; ill three months; pain all over and palpitation; is rather fat.
Legs. Slight oedema; very marked tenderness; numbness of legs and feet; knee jerk absent.
Arms. Grasp strong; muscles decidedly tender.
Heart.-Action regular, 80; no bruit. Slight pulsation in neck. Temperature 99 1°. Neck glands not palpable. Tenderness in general.
Two Cases from Kyegayuki.
Case No. 6. July 17th. Man; ill one month, pain knees and feet; heels are tender; also wrists; walks with a stick; knee jerk absent; no oedema; the attempt to elicit a knee jerk causes pain.
Case No. 8. July 17th. A woman; ill one month; carried to my tent on a man's shoulders; complains of pain in belly and limbs. Deep edema of legs, feet, and sacrum. Eyes puffy, almost closed. Thin. A systolic bruit heard. Pulsation in episternal notch. Calves are slightly tender; knee jerk obtained.
Urine. No albumen.
Two Cases from Kasinga.
Case No. 41.-Dubani. Man, 18-20; ill ten months. Walks with a stick. Pain in neck, chest, hip region, and neck [sic in original].
Legs. No oedema; no muscular tenderness; knee jerk absent. Arms. Grasp fair; no tenderness.
Heart.-Action regular; bruit behind sternum, not at apex; marked pulsation episternal notch; pulse 110. Temperature 100°.
