I AM directed by the Board of Trade to advert to your letter of the 16th August, on the subject of the future management of the Imperial Institute, and to say that the whole matter has now been considered by the Imperial Institute Advisory Committee, who have offered no objection to the arrangements contem- plated by the Departments concerned as set out in previous correspondence. As a consequence, and in accordance with the suggestion made in your letter under reply, the management of the Institute will be entrusted to the Colonial Office from 1st October next.

In making this communication I am to suggest, for Lord Elgin's consideration, the desirability of an officer of the Colonial Office being instructed to place himself in communication with the Finance Department of the Board of Trade, in order that he may acquaint himself with the method of keeping the Institute accounts.

WITH reference to previous correspondence, I am directed to inform you that the Secretary of State for India in Council has been pleased to nominate Colonel Duncan George Pitcher to be the Indian member of the Managing Com- mittee of the Imperial Institute for a period of two years, on a salary of £200 per annum, half of which will be payable from the general funds of the Institute under the terms of your letter of the 16th August, 1907,* to the Board of Trade. I AM directed by the Earl of Elgin to acknowledge the receipt of letter of the 8th instant,* reporting that the Secretary of State for India in Council has been pleased to nominate Colonel Duncan George Pitcher to be the Indian member of the Managing Committee of the Imperial Institute for a period of two years, and to inform you that a formal letter of appointment is being addressed to Colonel Pitcher.

I am to state that it is proposed that this appointment shall be regarded as dating from 8th October, 1907, the date of your letter announcing the nomination, and that the whole of Colonel Pitcher's remuneration as a member of the Managing Committee at the rate of £200 per annum-shall be issued to him quarterly by this Department, one-half being subsequently reclaimed from your Department.

Your remuneration in that capacity will be at the rate of £200 per annum, of which one-half will be provided from Indian funds and the other from the general funds of the Institute, but the whole will be issued to you by this Department quarterly.
