deficiency as against the sum of £27 16s. 6d., which the Assembly votes annually for this service, should be met from the Crown Funds of the Colony.
I hope, however, that the Assembly will agree to increase the contribution of the Colony to £50 per annum.

(No. 94.)
MY LORD,
Government House, Bermuda, September 5, 1906. I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt, on the 31st ultimo, of Your Lordship's circular despatch (1) of the 31st of July last,* on the subject of the Imperial Institute.
2. The position as regards the appropriation made by this Colony for an annual contribution to the Institute is as follows:-After the payment of £2 13s. 9d. for the current half-year, the balance remaining from the vote made by the Legislative Resolve, No. 4, of 1893, will be £13 9s. 3d. On the basis of an annual contribution of £5 7s. 6d., the amount available will be sufficient to meet the present annual contribution up to the 30th June, 1909, and there will be then a balance of £1 10s. 6d. available.
3. I gather from your despatch* under acknowledgment that it is Your Lordship's desire that I should not, for the present at least, invite the Legislature of this Colony to make any additional appropriation for this service; and I am advised that it would be impolitic at the present juncture to put forward any such application to the House of Assembly.
I have, &c.,
S. FREWEN, Lieutenant-Colonel,
Officer Administering the Government
and Commander-in-Chief.

Imperial Institute, and suggesting that, in view of the work performed by the Insti- tute on behalf of the Colonies, this Colony might be asked to contribute £100 per annum towards the general expenses of that Department.
2. At present the only members of the Legislative Council in the Colony are Mr. Archer, the Treasurer, Mr. Townsend, the Attorney-General, and Mr. Peirce, the Collector of Customs. I referred the despatch to the two first-mentioned officers, who expressed their opinion that the object therein set forth was a deserving one, and intimated their willingness to support a vote for the annual sum of £100 for a period of five years, when the matter comes before Council. I did not consult Mr. Peirce, as he is unfortunately at present in the hospital with an attack of fever.
3. As I feel confident that the absent members of Council would be equally willing to assent to the contribution in question, I this day telegraphed to your Lordship as follows:-
"Referring to your circular despatch of the 31st July, the Government of the Gambia agrees to contribute £100 per annum.”
4. The necessary provision will be made for this sum in the estimates for next year, but as the first contribution becomes payable from the 1st of October next, I should be obliged if, pending legislative approval, the Crown Agents may be instructed to pay such amount as may be necessary to the funds of the Imperial Institute.
