Transmits copy of a letter to the Com- missioners of the Exhibition of 1851 asking for a provisional continuance of the annual grant of £2,000, and of the Commissioners' reply declining the request.
Calls attention to the work of the Scientific and Technical Department of the Institute; explains that it is of very great importance both to the Colonies and to the United Kingdom, but that there is danger of its being discontinued through want of funds: and recommends that His Majesty's Government should grant £2,000 a year upon condition that an equal amount should be raised by contri- butious from the Colonial and other Governments interested.
Acknowledges No. 1 and encloses copy
of No. 2.
Forwards copy of a letter to Professor Dunstan, and copy of correspondence with the Royal Commissioners of the Exhibition of 1851 relative to the dis- continuance of the annual grant of £2,000 from the Commissioners.
Transmits copy of correspondence with the Treasury on the subject of main- taining and extending the work of the Scientific and Technical Depart- ment of the Imperial Institute, and suggests that the Colonial Office should assume a larger degree of responsibility for the conduct of the Institute.
Mr. Harcourt, in reply to a question by Mr. Laidlaw, explains how the charges for the maintenance of the Imperial Institute buildings are met, and furnishes a return of expenditure from 1899 to date.
States that the Treasury is prepared to make a grant-in-aid of £700 a year if the remaining portion of the deficit of £2,000 could be contributed by India and the Colonies.
Asks whether the Board may rely on receiving £1,300 from the Colonies during the year commencing 1st Octo- her, 1906, to supplement the £700 offered by the Treasury, and requests reply to Nos. 4 and 5.
