267. In Colonies possessing considerable quan- tities of waste land in course of settlement, the Surveyor-General should be required once a year to present a return of the progress of his department, for transmission to the Secretary of State. Besides making these regular returns, Governors are particularly enjoined to keep the Secretary of State punctually informed of the progress of geographical and scientific explora- tion in the Colonies, and in particular to transmit reports of journeys of discovery and investiga- tion of the natural history and capabilities of particular districts, with such maps and surveys as may be required for elucidation.
