LAW OFFICERS to COLONIAL OFFICE.
Royal Courts of Justice, 10th May 1884. We were honoured with your Lordship's commands, signified in Mr. Bramston's letter of the 18th ultimo, stating that he was directed by your Lordship to transmit, for our consideration, a case which had been prepared by the Solicitor to the Agent General for Victoria, on behalf of the Government of that Colony, in the matter of the pension paid by the Colonial Government to Sir Andrew Clarke, K.C.M.G.
That Mr. Bramston was to request that your Lordship might be favoured with ou opinion on the question submitted at the end of the case.

That having carefully considered the facts laid before us with reference to the nature of the offices of Director of Works, Commandant of the School of Military Engineering, and Inspector-General of Fortifications, which have been held Sir A. Clarke, we are of opinion that neither of them was a the Crown, within the meaning of the 50th section of the 18 & 19 Vict. c. 55.
