LAW OFFICERS to COLONIAL OFFICE.

WE were honoured with your Lordship's commands, signified in Mr. Bramston's

Temple, 4th May 1877. letter of the 10th of April ultimo, stating that he was directed by your Lordship to transmit to us a copy of a despatch from the Governor of Trinidad, enclosing a petition No. 21, addressed to your Lordship by a prisoner named Henry Barrow, in which he alleged 7 February that he had received an illegal sentence, and a report on the case by the Colonial 1877. Attorney-General; and to request that we would favour your Lordship with our opinion whether the view taken by the Supreme Court was correct.

Mr. Bramston was also to transmit for our assistance a copy of the Ordinances referred to by the Colonial Attorney-General in his report, No. 18 of 1842, No. 11 of 1844, and No. 3 of 1875.

That in our opinion the view taken by the Supreme Court was not correct. consider that the sentence passed on Henry Barrow was an illegal sentence.
