MY LORD,

No. 806. (CANADA.)

LAW OFFICERS to FOREIGN OFFICE.

We are honoured with your Lordship's commands signified in Mr. Hammond's

Temple, March 28, 1873. letter of the 21st instant, stating that he was directed by your Lordship to transmit to us a letter from the Colonial Office, forwarding correspondence on the subject of the claim of Dr. Rufus Bratton for compensation on account of his abduction from Canadian territory into the United States, and he (Mr. Hammond) was to request us to take the papers into consideration and report to your Lordship our opinion as to the course that should be pursued in regard to Dr. Bratton's claim.

The former correspondence was enclosed for reference.

In obedience to your Lordship's commands we have the honour to-

Report

That Her Majesty's Government cannot, in our opinion, suggest (support?) the claim of Dr. Rufus Bratton for compensation.

Sir E. Thornton, on the 30th January 1873, wrote to Mr. Hamilton Fish, acquainting Mr. Fish that Her Majesty's Government was prepared to accept as satisfactory the explanations given in the note from Mr. Fish of the 12th November 1872 of the circumstances under which the abduction took place. This letter of Sir E. Thornton, we are of opinion, precludes further action on the part of Her Majesty's Government.

We have, &c.

The Right Hon. the Earl Granville.

(Signed)

J. D. COLERIDGE. G. JESSEL.

J. PARKER DEANE.
