Judge Advocate General's Office, May 14, 1869. SIR,
In reference to your letter of the 3rd instant, enclosing to me correspondence received at the War Office from the Colonial Office in relation to the case of William Lawes, late Paymaster, 90th Foot, I have the honour to inform you that, under the 31st section of the Mutiny Act, the Commander-in-Chief in India has power to transfer to a prison in England any prisoner undergoing imprisonment in India under the sentence of a court-martial, and that, having read over the documents you have enclosed me in your letter of the 13th instant, I am of opinion that all the proper forms for the transfer to England of William Lawes, late paymaster, 90th Foot, who was undergoing a sentence of imprisonment in the Presidency gaol in Calcutta under a sentence of a court-martial, have been complied with, and that he is now in legal custody in the gaol at Winchester under the warrant of his Excellency Lieutenant-General Sir William Mansfield.
I return herewith the documents you transmitted to me in relation to the case.
I have, &c.
(Signed) COLMAN M. OʻLOGHLAN.
