LAW OFFICERS to FOREIGN OFFICE.
MY LORD,
Lincoln's Inn, February 11, 1864. We are honoured with your Lordship's commands, signified in Mr. Hammond's letter of the 5th instant, stating that with reference to his letter of the 30th ultimo respecting the case of the "Chesapeake," he was directed by your Lordship to transmit to us two further letters and their inclosures from the Colonial Office respecting this case, and to request that we would take these papers into consideration and favour your Lordship with such observations as we might have to offer thereupon.
In obedience to your Lordship's commands we have taken these 'papers into our consideration and have the honour to
Report
That the papers now submitted to us do not appear to raise any question which we had not considered in our former reports on this subject to your Lordship.
We think that his Excellency the Governor of New Brunswick exercised a wise discretion in allowing the accused person copies of the requisition and warrant. The objections to the formal character of the requisition were anticipated in our former report.
The conclusion of the trial not being stated in these papers we have no further observations to offer respecting them.
The Earl Russell, K.G.,
&c.

We have, &c.
