Doctors' Commons, November 26, 1861.

from Governor,

No. 78.

Bishop of Mon-

1261.

We are honoured with your Grace's commands signified in Mr. Elliot's letter of the 31st October ultimo, stating that your Grace having in accordance with our (1) Derpatch suggestion, referred the draft of the proposed new Letters Patent for appointing at opt s Metropolitan of Canada, for the consideration of the Bishop of Montreal and the 1) Letter from other bishops interested therein, your Grace has received, in answer to that reference, Sept. the papers noted in the margin, and in transmitting them for our report he was to express your Grace's strong opinion that unless there should be found to exist some very weighty objection to the adoption into the new Patent of the clauses recom- mended by the Provincial Synod, they should be accepted, as a protracted discussion of this subject must have injurious consequences to the Canadian Church.

In obedience to your Grace's commands, we have taken this matter into considera- tion, and have the honour to

That we have carefully read through these papers and we see no objection to the Falent of Bishop alterations of the Patent desired by the Provincial Synod of Canada and recommended dated on July by the Bishop of Montreal himself, sufficiently weighty to induce us to think that such desire and recommendation ought not to be complied with.
