The number of males and females sentenced to transportation in the above years could only be arrived at by a calculation which will entail two or three weeks' labour. But the sexes of the transports were distinguished in 1840, and it was then ascertained that of 4,105 persons sentenced to transportation in that year, 504 were females, or one female to 71 males,-which may serve as a basis to estimate the numbers in England in the subsequent years.
