Q. 18. On what conditions are remissions of imprisonment granted ?—A. Prisoners tried and convicted for the first time of offences other than unnatural crimes are, pro- vided their conduct during imprisonment is good, entitled by law and with the approval of the Governor to a remission of one-eighth part of their sentence. Other remissions are granted at the discretion of the Governor, under special conditions.

By Penal laprisonment" is meant imprisonment inflicted as a substantive punishment lo pursuance of a sentence of a Court of Justice, as distinguished from imprisonment for safe custody, &c.

4. How the profits of their labour is accounted for ?---There are no profils. Q. 10. What is the total annual cost of the prison ?--A. 5061. 6s. 1d.

Q. 11.-What is the annual amount of the prisoners' earnings ?-A. Nil.

Q. 12. What are the number of the hours allotted for sleep? And if sleep is in association are the dormitories lighted? and how often are they patrolled during the night ?-A. They sleep at pleasure day and night, not being liable to labour. Sleep in associated dormitories not lighted, but lights in yard. Officers patrol hourly.

Q. 13. What were the number and the nature of the punishments inflicted for offences committed in prison PA. 36 punished by confinement in separate cells, 7 of which on a diet of bread and water.

Q. 2.-If not on the separate system, what provision is there for the supervision of the prisoners while in association ?-A. Officers are on duty by day and night; at night with lanterns.

Q. 3. How many cells are there; and how many associated wards ?-A. Three cells. Eighteen associated wards.

Q. 4. Taking the average* number of prisoners in gaol, how many cubic feet of space are there for each prisoner during the hours of sleep?-4. 864.

Q. 5. How are the prisoners classified ?-4. Debtors. Prisoners for trial or for want of security. Prisoners under sentence, misdemeauants, and condemned criminals.
