The following Statement is quoted in the "Edinburgh Review," 1819, from a letter addressed to Lord Sidmouth, by the Hon. H. Grey Bennet, M.P.:

"The Colony of New South Wales, from 1788 to 1815 inclusive, has cost this country the enormous sum of 3,465,9831."

Some similar statistics are subjoined, from the latest Returns, viz., 1855, connected with Western Australia:

The date of these Returns is twenty-six years from the first settlement of Western Australis, and five years from the first introduction of convicts. It will be seen that the comparison between the progress of this Colony, and of New South Wales in its early days, is decidedly favourable to Western Australia.

Although not bearing immediately upon the object of the foregoing review, yet, as a matter of general interest, a brief account is subjoined of the same particulars in the latest Returns (1853) from the two Governments comprised in the original Colony of New South Wales.
