BARBADOES.
In 1837 an Act was passed for regulating the militia; and in 1839 au Act was passed for increas- ing the number and efficiency of the mounted militia of the island.
In 1842 the militia of this island mustered 800
men,
ST. LUCIA,
In February 1839 the militia of this island was disbanded by order of the Secretary of State.
GRENADA.
The militia is regulated by two Acts passed on the 1st of July, 1801, and the 31st of October,

FALKLAND ISLANDS,
A short Militia Law was passed in 1847, and No. 6, August 15, continued until 31st December, 1852.

Another Law was passed in 1851, which was disallowed in consequence of its many inaccuracies.
CAPE OF GOOD HOPE.
It has been held by all persons practically acquainted with the Cape of Good Hope, that in consequence of the scattered state of the population,
it would be impossible to establish a militia force in that colony.
But no valid objection has ever been raised against the creation of an urban militia for the defence of the large towns; and had such a militia been in existence during the Kafir rebellion, it would have enabled the authorities to send a batta- lion of infantry to the frontier.
ST. VINCENT.
By an Act passed in 1845 it was enacted that there should be a militia for this island; but only one muster has been held, and the arms have been returned.
TOBAGO.
By an Act passed on the 16th day of April, 1849,
all Acts relating to the militia which were then in force were suspended.
MAURITIUS.
The character of the population of Mauritius, the close relations which it has preserved with France,
and its intense prediliction for everything connected with that country, forbid the expectation that it would assist in defending the island against aggres- sion, especially if the aggression were French.
Not only, therefore, has no attempt been made to form a militia, but by an Order of the King in Council, dated the 6th of November, 1832, an association of volunteers, who had no doubt taken up arms for the purpose of overawing the Local Government, was disbanded.
BRITISHI GUIANA.
The militia was disbanded by Royal proclamation in 1839.
CEYLON.
There has never been a militia force in this colony.
