FEDERATED MALAY STATES.

HIGH COMMISSIONER SIR F. A. SWETTENHAM to MR. CHAMBERLAIN.

(Confidential.)

(Received February 17, 1902)

[Answered by No. 68.]

Government House, Singapore, January 20, 1902.

I HAVE the honour to enclose two lists containing my proposals for the Sterling Salaries of officers who have joined, or may join, the Service of the Federated Malay States subsequent to the 1st August, 1901.

List (A) deals with the appointments open to officers of the Cadet service only; while (B) covers the professional and all other posts carrying salaries of £120 a year and upwards, or for which it is probable that the holders will be selected in England.

2. In connection with this despatch I ask you to kindly consider all that I have written in my Straits Settlements despatch, No. 27, of equal date, so far as it will apply to the scheme now submitted for the Federated Malay States. The genera! remarks which follow deal with questions which are, in most cases, peculiar to the Federated Malay States Service.
