If the following books can be got second hand, it is advisable to bring them --Pollock or Anson on Contract. Best Evidence, Pollock on Torts, Smith's Mercantile Law (Vol. I. Law books are scarce in Ceylon, and seldom up to date if pur- chased second hand.
In addition to the above, if a Cadet has requisites of any sport or hobby, these requisites will also serve in Ceylon, e.g., for goll. football, cricket, polo, hockey, fishing, photography, &c. Pianos made for use in the United Kingdom are not suitable for Ceylon
Next to lawn tennis, golf is the most general game. Books, with a little care, keep all right in Ceylon.
As regards taking out a motor cycle or the like, it may be stated that Ceylon roads are remarkably good, and if you have got a motor cycle bring it.
Note.—Take out all sporting kit you have, but if you have not got a gun, rifle, saddle, do not purchase in England at the present high prices. These can probably be bought second hand in Ceylon without any difficulty.
(2) If saddlery is taken, it should be put in a zinc-lined box and soldered air-light.
Summary.
1. Take to Ceylon all clothes, sporting and otherwise, such as you would wear in the summer in England. Do not make heavy purchases in England, but add as sense will direct to your stock of vests, shirts, and collars, which you naturally want more of in a hot climate.
2. Pack in such bags and suit cases as you have already, and
if you have not already got them, get a cabin trunk (about 36 by
14 by 22 in.) and a uniform case, not large. Also dirty-linen bag. 8. Buy sun hat and all light cotton suite on arrival in Ceylon. Buy nothing of this kind in England.
