1 cabin trunk.
ILL-OUTFIT.
Trunks, eto. Essential
1 kit or Gladstone bag or suit case.
1 uniform case. 1 dressing case.
1 soiled linen cabin bag with lock.
Of these, a good type of cabin trunk is that made of Willesden canvas on battens with leather protectors at the corners.
A small dressing case is invaluable on the voyage and when travelling in Ceylon.
All boxes should have the owner's name painted on, but not his destination, for it misleads on subsequent journeys.
(i.) Note.-A suit case or kit bag is essential on board ship, in addition to the cabin trunk.
(ii.) Changes of underclothing, any thin clothes in possession, flannel shirts, flannel trousers, &c., should be put in one box and marked "Wanted on Voyage."
(iii.) A soiled linen bag (canvas, with lock) should be taken with cabin luggage.
(iv.) One wooden zinc-lined box is useful if pictures and any household linen are being brought.
(v.) Insurance of all kit for voyage is strongly recommended. Soft tersi hats are often worn, Bowler hats are never worn. especially double ones.
Helmets
An Ellwood helmet (less ugly with puggaree) is the best head wear for all weathers, as rain does not injure it.. Otherwise a pigsticker helmet is cheaper and lighter. and equally safe as regards protection against the sun. are generally worn if out of doors between 7 A.M. and 4.80 P.M. The sun rises at about 5.30 A.M. and sets before 7 p.m. all the year round. Helmets can be obtained at Port Said, but better on arrival at Colombo.
