III. BOOTS.

Bring whatever you have; brown leather boots are the most useful, but all can be got locally at moderate prices.

Police Probationers' brown boots should have plain toe caps, us they can then be worn with uniform.

Nate.—White drill and khaki suits can all be got locally. They cannot be got in England except at about three or four times the local price and even then they are unsatis- factory.

It is advisable to bring a well cut pair of riding breeches as a pattern.

IV. BAGGAGE.

Do not bring a great deal on first coming out, and do not bring any large trunks. The following will probably be found sutfi- cient :-

A good black canvas trunk zinc-lined, say (36 × 24 × 16 inches) cost about £2 10s. to £3. This will hold a large amount of clothing and should be marked "wanted on voyage" but not "cabin.*

Two strong uniform cases, not very large, and any leather or canvas bags or portmanteaux already possessed.

Do not buy any new leather baggage, as it does not stand the climate well.

A brown canvas soiled linen bag for the cabin is indis- pensable.

Do not bring many books and, if possible, not those in good bindings. They can all be packed in a small wooden zinc-lined packing case and should be marked "not wanted Un voyage.

V. SPORTING OUTFIT.

Bring all you have, as there is ample opportunity for playing all out-door games. Also any guns, rifles, &c. A saddle is useful.

VI. POLICE PROBATIONERS.

Uniforms.-These can be obtained locally at moderate prices and the accoutrements (helmet, sword, revolver, buttons, &c.) are issued on loan by the Government.

Clothing for China.—As Police Probationers are sent to Chine and have to pass two winters there, they should bring a supply of the same clothes as they would wear in the winter in England. A Police Probationer should have a bicycle, which is prac- tically necessary for the performance of his duties. The bicycle will be of no use in China, and as a Police Probationer only spends about six or eight months in the Straits on first coming out, it would be more economical to bring out any bicycle already possessed than to purchase a new one locally.

3

If fond of riding bring a small light saddle, which will be useful in China where riding is the recreation most easily obtain. able. A good pony can usually be bought in Canton for $60 or $70) (say £6) and only costs about 25. a month to keep.

A light well-ventilated mackintosh is very useful, but the seams should be seWD.

Note. The above remarks apply equally to Cadets who are sent to China, but Cadets cannot tell before leaving England whether they are to be sent to China or not, whereas Police Probationers know beforehand and can provide accordingly.

VII. FURNISHING AND PLENISHING OF QUARTERS. Partly furnished quarters are provided for both Cadets and Police Probationers and all additional articles of furniture required can be purchased locally. It is, however, desirable to bring out from Home cutlery (say six large knives and twelve small) also spoons (say six table, twelve dessert, twelve tea, six egg) and forks (six large, twelve dessert) all plated, not silver. Mattresses, pillows, linen of various sorts, mosquito net, &c., can all be got locally, though it is perhaps advisable to bring table linen from Home.
