As Master - His principal attributions are —To conduct and manage judicial sales from the initiation of proceedings to, and including the distribution of the proceeds of, the sales and erasure of inscriptions; to preside and conduct family councils, to receive and open wills, &c., and he has the control and management of his office.
As Registrar --Is the head officer of the registry. note as taxing officer. has to attend Court on every Friday for the fixing of the weekly cause list, and is the sub-accountant of the Supreme Court Department, within the meaning of the Financial Regulations.
Chief clerk, Rs 4,800,
MASTER'S OFFICE
Attends the sittings of the Master's Court and of the Bankruptcy Division as registrar, and drafta rules and orders of the judge in bankruptcy.
Third clerk. Rs. 2,40
Receives as personal allowance, Rs. 600). Total Rs. 3,000.
Drafts schemes of distribution of money; memoranda of divisions in kind; meetings of family councils. productions of wills, appointment of guardians under Ordinance No. 4 of 1871.
Third clerk. Rs. 2,400,
Acta na cashier and keeps all the books relating to the receipt and payment of all collections of money. iv) Fourth clerk. Rs 1,800.
Attends to matters concerning sales, to the drafting of sales memoranda and orders, to searches, to the checking of bills of costs and to the drafting of certificates of inscription of legal mortgage.

Attends to all the copying work, and is in charge of the correspondence.
Second Flerk, Rs 3,600,
REGISTRY
Daily attends the sitttings of the Supreme Court (civil or criminal) as registrar, drafta judgments, rules and orders of court, prepares the jury list, the jury book, the panels, security bonds, certificates, &c.; in vacation, he further classifies the records, enters the judgments in the action books; drafts criminal statistics, and replaces the chief clerk of the Master's Office, when sheent, as registrar in Bankruptcy Court.
(ii) Third clerk, Rs. 2.400.
Le financial clerk and cashier; is in charge of all the books relating to the financial business of the whole department, and drafts the financial statistics for the Blue Book, prepares the Estimates, &c. fui) Fourth clerk, Ra. 1,800.
Occasionally attends the sittings of the Supreme Court (civil or criminal) as registrar, specially when the court sits in two divisions, attends to searches, keeps (a) the cause lists (general and weekly), (b) the records (from their very inception), (c) all the books except those kept by the 3rd clerk.
(iv) Fifth clerk, Rs. 1,200.
Attends to the criminal business (including taxation of witnesses' summons), drafts the calendar, is in charge of the requisitions for the department, checks the items of expenditure in bills of costa in civil cases. and attends to the public when both the 2nd and 4th clerks are engaged in court.
(v) Two sixth clerks, Rs. 720 each.

C. 8. --Savings have been made in the staff of my department posterior to Mr. Lyttelton's despatch of 10th September 1904, namely:—(a) abolition of the post of Chief Clerk, Registry (Rs. 4,800), on retirement of the titular in May 1905, and (b) saving of Rs. 600 on retirement, in October 1906, of Mr. Piarroux, 3rd clerk. Muster's Office, who was in receipt of that amount as personal allowance,
These savings were realised as a consequence of a plan for the reorganisation of the Supreme Court suggested by the judges and adopted by the Governor, the Legislature of this Colony, and the Honourable the Secretary of State for the Colonies in 1898.
The other vacancies which occurred had to be filled.
C. 9. The cost of collection consists in the salary of the two cashiers (Rs. 4,800 altogether) and the average revenue collected for the last five years has been Rs. 24,836.11.

C. 11. The judges have, at the request of the Governor, each sent in a report on the desirability of ablishing one of the posts of judge in the Supreme Court. Those reports have, I presume, been submitted the Royal Commissioners. I have nothing further to add, having endeavoured to make my written answere
mplete as possible.

Perform minor duties connected with the above main duties, and are in charge of the correspondence. and act as copying clerks.

Only acta an registrar in court twice a week during term time-on Mondays and Fridays. Has very seldom to act as shorthand writer.
ACCOUNTANT IN BANKRUPTCY'S OFFICE.
Personal allowance, Ra. 1,000. Total Rs. 6,000.
Sends annual returns of every (i) Accountant. Rs. 5,000.
Keepe books and accounts of each bankrupt estate and his office accounts. bankrupt estate. Acts as receiver, takes possession and has the management of bankrupt estates. exercise a general control over the bankrupte, their property, the management of their estates and affairs. the discovery of their property, the composition of schemes of arrangement, the trustees, &c. Presides over the meetings of creditors, reports to the court on compositions, applications for discharge, &c., conducts the public examination of debtors, keeps a separate record of every bankruptcy case.
(ii) Clerk, Rs. 1,200,
Acts as assistant to the accountant for the keeping of his office accounts and those of the bankrupt estates, has also occasionally to replace the accountant in the taking possession of bankrupta' estates, &c.
(i) The Librarian, Rs. 720.
THE LIBRARY OF THE SUPREME COURT.
Is in charge of the library. Has leisure hours and will be directed to lend assistance in the registry in view of an increase of work accruing to the other clerka consequent upon the abolition of one of the 6th clerkships as suggested in C. (4).
C. 3.-1 consider that it is impossible to reduce my establishment vote by a substantial sum. The Supreme Court has, since 1891, as may be seen by the annexed table showing the personal emoluments in my department for the years 1891, 1900, and 1909, generously contributed its share towards the reduction of the expenditure of the Colony, and any further reduction, except as suggested in Answer C. 4, would be prejudicial to the good working of my department.

The only reduction I suggest in the staff of my department is
((i) Abolition of the post of shorthand writer
(ii) Abolition of one of the posts of 6th clerk in the master and registrar's office
