Lord Crewe understands that the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury are prepared to agree to the payment from the Vote for Temporary Commissions of the allowances proposed by the Admiralty, except that they consider that the Secretary should mess in the Ward Room at the same rate as Vice Consuls, viz. :-12s. a day I am accordingly to request that for the first 14 days and 9s. a day subsequently.

I HAVE laid before the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury Mr. Cox's letter of the 18th instant (16430/1909),* relative to the scale of allowances to be paid in respect of the entertainment of the Mauritius Royal Commissioners and their staff on H.M.S. "Forte " during the voyage from Cape Town to Mauritius.

In reply, I am to request you to inform the Earl of Crewe that my Lords concur in the proposed rates, which they understand are based on the King's Regulations on the subject, viz. :—

£3 a day for the Chairman of the Commission (to be reduced to £1 1s. a day

after the first seven days).

£1 1s. a day for the other Commissioners.

12s. a day for the Secretary and the two Shorthand Writers (to be reduced to

9s. a day after the first 14 days).

My Lords will be prepared to refund the amounts due on this basis from the Vote for Temporary Commissions, on the receipt of a claim from the Admiralty, and they are informing the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty accordingly.

With regard to paragraph 3 of the letter under reply, my Lords agree that the payment of the above allowances for victualling will not affect the payment to the Commission when on board the "Forte" of the subsistence allowances for time spent on board ship sanctioned by Treasury letters of the 30th ultimo and the 6th instant.†
