Admiralty, 14th May, 1909. WITH reference to your letter of the 7th instant, No. 15312/1909,* relative to the conveyance of the Mauritius Royal Commission from Cape Town to Port Louis in H.M.S." Forte," I am commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to request you will inform the Secretary of State for the Colonies that the following scale of allowances is proposed for the entertainment of the Commis- sioners and their Secretary, viz. :—
For Sir F. Swettenham, £3 a day for the first seven days; £1 1s. a day after-
wards.
For the other Commissioners and Secretary, £1 1s. a day for the whole period. The above scale is laid down in Class III., Article 1530, King's Regulations, as applicable to Chargé d'Affaires, Secretaries of Legation, Governors, &c., vide also Clause 2 of the same Article.
My Lords would be glad to know whether the Secretary of State considers the above allowances suitable.
It is understood that the Secretary of State considers that the social status of the two shorthand clerks is such as to fit them for the Ward Room Mess, and I am to The state that their Lordships would be glad of an assurance that this is the case. scale of allowance for these gentlemen, if messed in the Ward Room, would be 12s. a day for the first 14 days, and 9s. a day subsequently.
My Lords assume that provision will be made by the Colonial Office for these expenses in common with other expenses of the Commission.
