REFERRING to our letter to you of the 26th instant,† Messrs. Deloitte and Company inform us that they yesterday commenced their inspection of the Company's books at the office of the London Committee, and that both Mr. Fraser, the London Secretary, and Mr. Attlee, the London Solicitor (the latter of whom called at the Company's office whilst Messrs. Deloitte and Company were engaged on their inspec- tion) offered every facility for such inspection being proceeded with.

Messrs. Druces and Attlee write us to-day urging the necessity of the appoint- ment of arbitrators and of the umpire being completed forthwith.

DEAR MR. OMMANNEY,

GULLAND has just been here.

take immediate action Colonial Office?"

I asked him what he objected to, and he didn't know. I suggested that this was presumably an ordinary accounting firm, and that the Colonial Government had a perfect right to employ them if they chose. This is doubtless what Attlee was grumbling to you about.

All the same I don't quite understand it: it seems to me that Derrick will simply be traversing the same ground as Deloitte's people.

2.

He said that they were engaging counsel, &c., and wanted money, and suggested that as the Government would have to pay eventually, they might as well advance some now. I told him that I would offer no opinion on the matter, which had better be discussed between the lawyers.
