2. As His Excellency is prepared to have the construction made out of general revenue, I enclose a warrant for the sum which is likely to be required up to the end of the financial year, viz., Rs. 50,000. The works will take about six months.

3. I also enclose reports from the responsible railway officials about the permanent way and the engines that can be utilized for the proposed line.

G. DE CORIOLIS,

Surveyor-General.

INSPECTOR OF PERMANENT WAY to GENERAL MANAGER OF RAILWAYS.

April 16, 1903.

I beg to inform you that we shall have about 5 miles of second-hand materials suitable for a line with light rolling stock. I estimate the life of the rails to be at least 15 years, if the traffic is not very heavy.

G. LATTER.

LOCOMOTIVE SUPERINTENDENT to GENERAL Manager of RAILWAYS.

April 15, 1903.

With reference to your question re locomotive power for the proposed branch line from Terre Rouge to Mountain Long, I beg to inform you that we have three small locomotives in good working order and condition weighing twenty-two tons each, which are not now sufficiently powerful for our heavy goods shunting requirements, and have been replaced for some time past by more powerful engines.

These engines would, in my opinion, be very suitable for the Montagne Longue branch line in every way.

I may mention that some years ago this class of engine was employed between Central and Pamplemousses, and did good useful work; they are of good useful design, and are strongly built, and are, in addition, economical in working.

J. G. WATSON,

Loco. Superintendent.
