extending rapidly amongst the Sinhalese villagers, to whom it was formerly unknown. The people have not taken much notice of the use of opium by their neighbours, and regard it with indifference.
4. It is cheaper, easier to transport, and held in less opprobrium by Buddhists, than arrack. I believe its increased use here is due to the extra difficulty the villagers have in procuring arrack for moderate use in small quantities.
5. Ganja is not sold here, nor is it used much. I have seen plants in a few gardens, however, grown by Tamils.

2. In this district, opium is not consumed on the seller's premises, and I cannot supply the information asked by paragraph 3.
3. The effects of the use of the drug have not been noticed, as the people have only of late taken to opium, and excessive indulgence is very rare as yet. Its use is
