SIR C. C. LEES to LORD KNUTSFORD.

(Received July 26, 1890.)

Government House, Mauritius, June 16, 1890. WITH reference to your Lordship's Despatch, No. 72, of the 23rd February last in respect to the redistribution of the Ecclesiastical Grants in this Colony, I have the honour to enclose copy of the Minutes of Proceedings of a Committee of the whole Council of Government which was beld on the 14th May last, and was read and confirmed this day, by which you will see that the scheme which has commended itself for adoption by the three Christian Churches in Mauritius is that which, while maintaining in respect to the Catholic Church the resolution arrived at on the 8th December 1889, adopts for the other two Churches the sums respectively laid down for each by your Lordship, thus creating an additional sum of Rs. 15,486 to be yearly voted in the estimates.

2. The question of the existing Establishments has not been disturbed, and the increased amounts voted for the clergy will not carry with it any pension rights.

3. The mode of applying these grants will have to be altered, and is being considered by sub-committees appointed for the purpose.

4. The main principle, however, of distribution being now practically adopted, and being acceptable both to Archbishop Meurin and to Archdeacon Mathews, I have deemed it right not to delay the expression of my hope that the scheme will equally meet with your Lordship's approval.

The Right Hon. Lord Knutsford, G.C.M.G.,

I have, &c.
